What’s The Difference Between UVA And UVB Rays?
The rays that are most damaging to our skin are called ultraviolet (UV) rays. There are two basic types of ultraviolet rays that reach the earth’s surface—UVB and UVA. UVB are the rays that damage the epidermis, or the top layer of the skin. They cause sunburns and play the greatest role in causing skin cancer.
On the other hand, UVA rays penetrate more deeply than UVB rays, through the epidermis and into the middle layer of the dermis. They’re also powerful enough to pass through glass and cloud cover – so if you think that you’re safe on a cloudy day or behind a car window, think again. They play a greater role in premature skin aging changes including wrinkle formation (photoaging*). Like UVB rays, they are also responsible for causing skin cancer.
*Photoaging is premature aging of the skin caused by repeated exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV), primarily from the sun but also from artificial UV sources.
What does SPF and PA+ mean?
SPF (Sun Protection Factor)
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. The number tells you how long the sun’s UVB rays would take to redden your skin if you apply the sunscreen exactly as directed compared with the amount of time without sunscreen. So, if you use an SPF 30 product properly, it would take you 30 times longer to burn than if you used no sunscreen.
PA+
Some sunscreens include PA+ rating on their products. The letters “PA” followed by plus signs (PA+, PA++, PA+++, and PA++++) on a label are a rating system to represent how much UVA protection the product offers. The effective protection time of PA+ is about 4 hours, while the PA++ is about 8 hours. PA+++ is super protective.
