Top 10 Things That Are Stopping You From Having A Clear & Glowy Skin

With a much higher level of awareness of skin care health lately, so many people have “perfected” their skincare routine, or though it seems. However, it turns out there are actually many factors that contribute to skin imperfections, many of which we’re not even aware of. If you wash and moisturize every day with the right products and are still dealing with dark spots, dullness, dry skin, or breakouts (more than the period zit here and there), there’s likely an underlying reason. So here are 10 things you need to avoid to have a clear and glowing skin.✨✨

1. You’re applying your products in the wrong order

A correct sequence for applying your skin care is crucial if you want to get the most out of all your products. A general rule of thumb is the lightest products and those with the most beneficial ingredients go on first, then your heavier creams and you always end with your SPF (liquids, then gels, then creams).

  • Cleanser
  • Toner
  • Spot Treatment
  • Serum
  • Eye Cream
  • Moisturizer

2. Forgetting to clean everything that comes in contact with your skin

Cleaning with the right cleanser might not always be enough to keep skin clean. The goal is to avoid as much dirt and bacteria coming into contact with your skin as possible. Wipe your phone screen and sunglasses every day to kill any pore-clogging bacteria, and change pillowcases regularly (at least once a week, if not twice).

Also make sure to regularly clean your makeup or skincare brushes since bacteria can grow quickly on synthetic hair. It also goes for your hands — whenever you’re touching your face (like putting on make up; washing your face or applying skincare), your hands should be clean.

3. Using Too Many Products

We all have our skin care routine, or are trying to find just the right one. But you may be using too many active products at once, tipping the scales toward irritation rather than being beneficial. “Remember to keep your skincare routine simple. 12-steps routines are popular but they may not work any better than one or two steps” says Dr. Joshua Zeichner, dermatologist. So, keeping it simple usually helps people stay on track with regular use of their products.

4. Eating a No-Fat Diet

Many of the low-fat diets and products are losing popularity with the shocking revelation that fat is, in fact, not bad for you (as long as it’s the good kind!). Omega-3 fatty acids in particular keep skin moisturized and assist in collagen production, both of which keep skin radiant. Load up on avocados, extra-virgin olive oil, flaxseeds, salmon, eggs, and nuts and seeds to make sure you’re getting enough of the right nutrients to give your skin what it needs to be healthy. 5. Not giving your products enough time to sink in

Don’t rush through your routine, after you cleanse, tone and spot treat, wait 3-5 mins for your skin to really take in all the product. When you don’t give your skin enough time to really benefit, you end up diluting the products you are applying and they won’t work as well as they are intended to.

6. Not giving your skin enough time to adjust to a new product

Speaking of experimenting with new products, there’s an abundance of good stuff out there — face oils, serums, toners, essences, sheet masks, balms — and it’s easy to feel like want to try out everything when the next best thing is always popping up on the news or written about in your favorite magazine.

But — honesty time — most ingredients take a while to actually work, so it’s always important to give it time whenever you’re trying a new product. Ask your dermatologist if certain ingredients or new products are right for you, and give it at least 2-3 months to actually see a difference. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was flawless skin.

7. Taking showers the wrong way

Since we spend so much time in the shower, it’s crucial to the health of our skin that we’re showering the right way. Showers that are too hot will dry out skin, and even worse, burn it, causing inflammation and rosacea* to act up. Whatever facial cleansing you do in the shower should be the very last step, right before you get out — cleansing causes acidity, so you need to put on product immediately after washing to balance the skin.

*Rosacea: A common skin condition that causes redness and visible blood vessels in your face. It may also produce small, red, pus-filled bumps.

8. Using the wrong toothpaste

Yes, really! — if you often get breakouts around your mouth, fluorides and chemicals in most toothpaste (especially whitening) can cause breakouts. Try switching to a more natural paste with less chemicals and try to use a little less toothpaste with each brush to avoid too much foaming.

9. You don’t apply your skincare upwards, and your makeup downwards

When applying your skin care, you should always rub the products into your skin in an upward motion and not downward. This is to allow all the product to really seep into your skin and get absorbed really well. On the other hand, when you apply your makeup, you want to do it in a downward motion so your makeup stays on your skin and doesn’t clog your pores or gets absorbed by your skin too much.

10. You’re either over or under exfoliating

First, you need to know your skin type, dry, combination/oily or normal skin. Then you can figure out an exfoliating regimen that works best for you. If you still don’t know what is your skin type, click here to find out!

  • Normal Skin: Exfoliate 2-3 times a week (depending on how your skin has been reacting that week)
  • Combination/Oily Skin: Exfoliate 3 times a week ( opt for a gentle exfoliator, it’s never a good idea to be harsh on your skin)
  • Dry Skin: Exfoliate 2 times a week

We hope we’ve given you enough to truly get the most out of your skincare regimen, and if you know someone who’s doing the things listed above, go on and send this to them, sharing is caring after all!
